Jonah 1:5

Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

I find it amazing that while everyone around Jonah is in turmoil trying to figure out what was wrong he was sleeping.  Sin can do that to us, we become so wrapped up in ourselves thatJ we are desensitized to the sin in our lives.  Maybe it starts with a new friend and she isn’t too interested in spiritual things but she makes you laugh and she loves to shop but the more you seem to be together the more you seem to be letting things slide.  It may start with a little gossip or you have to rush to meet her so you miss your devotions this morning, but it’s only this once.

We have all been there at some point where we have let one thing slide and then another and another until it is hard to drag yourself to church on Sunday and reading your Bible and praying have become a thing of the past.  Satan is sneaky he knows that when we are at our best he can’t just throw something big at us, he starts with the little things.  It’s like marriage, when the little things go everything else starts to slowly slide downhill as well.

We have to work at keeping our guard up at all times, that is why we need the full armor of God.  We also need to look out for those around us.  If you see someone else starting to slide it isn’t always necessary to say something but you can help intervene by just spending time with them and being a godly example.  We need to take more responsibility for each other and lift each other up before we hit rock bottom.  Sometimes a simple card or invitation to lunch can be just the vision of Christ the other lady needs to encourage her in the right direction.

In 2 Chronicles 12:14 it says, “And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord.”  Let’s determine today that we will prepare our hearts first thing every morning and we will make the decision to stay on the right path with the Lord’s help.  It is easier to stay on the right track than it is to get back on after your detour.
