2 Kings 4:1  A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

This poor widow was facing horrible circumstances, if her sons were taken away to be slaves there would be no one to care for her and she more than likely would have died in her poverty.  Elisha asked her what she had in her house that she could sell and she told him she didn’t have anything other than a little oil.  He told her to go and borrow empty vessels from her neighbors and to borrow several not just a few, and then she was to go in the house and pour the oil out into the vessels.  She and her husband obviously did owe the man money and that is why he was coming to take the only thing she had left, her sons.  How horrible she must have felt.

I look around today and wonder; how many of us have been or are in a similar stressful situation?  The economy took such incredible nose dive a few years ago and so many people have paid a dear price.  There are other stresses in our lives as well that when we look around it seems as though there’s no escape.

I can’t help but wonder how many vessels she borrowed.  How much faith did she have?  The oil kept coming as she filled those vessels and Elisha told her to sell the oil and pay her debt and she and her sons could live off the rest.  I am thinking no matter how many vessels she borrowed she probably kicked herself for not borrowing 5 more.

We don’t know why she was in debt, there could be many reasons but it obviously wasn’t important, God was still there.  Do you limit God by thinking you got yourself into the situation you are in by maybe making the wrong choices so God isn’t going to help?  God doesn’t always deliver quite like he did in this case but I do believe that if we truly seek Him, He will provide a way of escape from whatever it is; financial problems, addictions, bad habits like gossiping, marriage problems, etc.

When you pray and ask God to bless you and provide ask yourself like this woman must have; how much of God’s blessing do I want?  At some point she stopped asking for more vessels and started to fill them and at that point the decision was made.  Where are you drawing a line with God?  Are you expecting great blessing on your life today or do you think maybe just a little will be all you deserve?  God loves us and He loves to bless us.  Don’t allow your lack of faith to hold you back from ALL the blessings God has for you.  Ask God to guide you today into more faith and blessing.
