Ecclesiastes 5:2  Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.  For God is in heaven and you on earth; Therefore let your words be few.

Just as the Bible tells us to take every thought captive in 2 Corinthians 10:5 we also need to have control over our spoken words.

The Bible is full of verses that tell us to have control over what we speak, to bridle our tongues and to be careful not to say too much when we are angry.  We need to be as careful about what we say to ourselves as we are to others but one thing that we clearly must remember is that words spoken in anger cannot be taken back.  The damage that can be done with our words can destroy relationships between friends, spouses, parents and children and coworkers.  We do have the ability to care and to control our tongues.  It is a choice that we must each make every day; take our thoughts captive and take our words seriously enough to filter what is said.

Anything you utter as a Christian you are uttering before God, the Holy Spirit lives within you so think about it – what exactly does He have to listen to every day?  Are you hindering the power of God on your life by not taking control of your thoughts and words?  God will only use us to the extent that we are obedient especially in these areas.

In Proverbs 20:11 the Bible says; “Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.”  How much more is an adult known by his or her behavior?  God loves us and wants what is best for us and some of these things come through our daily choices, no more of that “just the way that I am” stuff, we need to seriously take control of our thoughts and speech so God can move us to another level in our lives.  The nice thing is that we can start today!  Today is fresh with no mistakes in it so we can choose to be obedient from this moment on.  Ask God to forgive your past and to give you the wisdom, strength and desire to make the changes you personally need to make, He is always ready and willing to help!
