Proverbs 4:23

Above all else guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

I  don’t know about you but when I first saw this verse years ago, I figured I was guarding my heart because I had put up some strong walls to keep everyone out so I couldn’t get hurt!  Trust me that isn’t what the verse is saying here and there are more ways than one to guard your heart.

First we guard our hearts by giving them to God by accepting Christ as our Savior and allowing Him to be our protector in all things.

Second; we quit wearing our hearts on our sleeves where just anyone can take a bite out of it.  We need to be careful setting boundaries in our lives so we are not used or abused, you are royalty and you deserve to be treated as a child of the King.

Now here is an area that many of us have a difficult time with and that is guarding your heart by making sure you are doing those things that feed it!  What are some of your favorite things to do?  I love to be outside, I love going for walks and riding horses, I love animals in general, I love the Great Lakes and any time I can get on a beach up in Northern MI, I love to read, I love to laugh and enjoy those I love but now the question is; how much time do I spend doing those things?  It is vital heart therapy to make sure you are doing things on a regular basis to enjoy life or you will wake up one day and find that you are so overwhelmed with life because it has become all work and no play.

There is nothing worse than realizing when you genuinely laugh about something that you hardly laugh anymore, I know because I did that the other day.  I grew up in a family where we laughed over everything as long as no one got hurt.  My parents used to tell me that God must have given me to them to give them the gift of laughter, I am not sure if that is a good thing or not.  I love my heritage though of having parents who knew how to laugh through the good and the bad times and my children and I laugh sometimes even now over the things we laugh about.  Laughter is a good thing and God gave it to us to keep us healthy mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

Try it today – lighten up!  Go do something even if it is only for 10 minutes just for you that you enjoy.  Is there something crafty you like to do that you haven’t done in quite some time? Go get the stuff and start doing it again!  You need to enjoy life it is too short to be spending all of your time serious and focused on the stressful stuff.  There’s always something to stress over so go look for something to enjoy instead, the other stuff will be there when you get back and you can pick up where you left off.  You will be amazed at the good it will do you and those around you when you take your heart back and start feeding it the good things in life that God meant for you to enjoy.
