Laughter is the Best Medicine

Psalm 126:2  “Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with singing.” Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

Never underestimate the power of laughter!  Doctors tell us that there is healing in laughter when a person is seriously ill and I know if I have had a really rough day there is nothing better than finding something funny to laugh at.  I just love to laugh and I find some times I get too caught up in life to laugh any more and that is just not right!  In this verse it is clear that their laughter played a big roll in others knowing that God was working in their lives and not only that but that God was doing great things for them!

My parents used to tell me that they figured God gave me to them to make them laugh.  I was a surprise 5 years after my brother when they weren’t expecting or probably even really wanting any more children.  When the news came that my mom was pregnant and NOT going through menopause, as if they probably weren’t horrified enough that they were going to have their fifth child, their other children weren’t all that excited either;  one of my older sisters told them “well, if you hadn’t been doing something you weren’t supposed to be doing this wouldn’t have happened.” – she was eleven and then when they brought me home my brother of course at 5 wanted me taken back to the hospital.  So see, they had reasons to laugh before I could even speak.  Over the years somehow the things I said and did gave them something to laugh about, I almost typed always gave them something  but that would be far from the truth, I also gave them some incredible challenges but somehow we all survived it.  My Mom is still the type of woman who loves to laugh and I really have learned to see growing up in a home where we laughed over almost everything as part of my godly heritage!  I love to laugh and I also taught my children to laugh especially when times get tough.

Do you laugh?  Do your children laugh?  Or are you one of those people who are too busy taking everything in life so seriously you don’t know how to laugh anymore?  It is time to lighten up!  Let’s all take today and focus on finding things that will make us laugh, you don’t have to laugh all day if you don’t want to but seriously now find something to laugh about.  I tell you what if you can’t think of something then check out Jeanne Robertson on Youtube, if she doesn’t make you laugh, your sense of humor is broken!  I just listened to her video called “Don’t send a man to the grocery store.”  That should get things started.  Determine today to enjoy your day and determine to bring laughter into your home regardless of what may be going on, it will heal your hearts and give you a new perspective on life.  Sometimes it is exactly what we need to be more productive, just give it a try today!
