What are Your Motives?

Ephesians 6:12  Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord.

What are your motives?  We are all at times self-centered but we are called to be God-centered.  We need to do an inward check at times to see what our motives really are in all that we do.  Are we doing it to gain someone else’s attention or favor or are we truly behaving in a godly way to please Him?  Sometimes we can get so caught up in what we want that we are missing out on God’s best because we are too focused on ourselves.

Pastor Bob Barnes in 15 Minutes Alone with God for Men shared the following prayer that is applicable to men and women:  “Father God, search me and show me my motivation for what I do.  Forgive my selfishness.  Give me a pure heart that joyfully and energetically serves You, the Author and Giver of life.  Help me serve with my eyes on You and not on other people, hoping they’ll notice what I do.  And thank you for the gracious and generous rewards You promise even when our motives aren’t pure and our service is imperfect. Amen”

I would encourage each of us today to take a look inside ourselves and ask the question; “what is my deepest motivation in all that I do?”  Am I living for God, myself or others?  Ask God today to give you the insight and the strength to change any motivation and attitudes that don’t line up with His.  The most satisfying life we can have is one that is focused on God in all that we do, to bring honor and glory to His name, not our own.

Quote:  “It’s not the things you get but the hearts you touch that will determine your success in life.”
