When Service is Out of Place

Luke 10: 41
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary, Mary has chosen the good portion which will not be taken away from her.”

It is so easy to get anxious and frustrated even though we may be serving God in what we are doing to the point that we are missing out on spending time with Him. Don’t allow your service for Him take the place of spending time alone with Him! And, don’t allow the struggles you are facing in life to fill your mind to the point that you are consumed with it and you miss time in your Bible and on your knees in prayer.

I love to serve others, in fact I have loved working in the service industry over the years because I am very comfortable serving others. There is nothing wrong with serving others, in fact we are called to serve others, so what was the problem here with Martha? I can almost feel her pain here as she is thinking ‘about all the people that were in the house that needed to be served and there sat her sister while Martha was trying to do it all and on top of that she was so busy she didn’t get to sit at Jesus feet and listen to Him. After all, the people were all there because of Jesus and Martha loved Jesus and loved to spend time with Him too, so who was Mary to just sit and let her do it all?’ Ladies, there are times when the needs of others needs to take a backseat to your time alone with God. It won’t hurt for them to wait for you to be able to do what you need to do for yourself and your walk with God, don’t let anything or anyone take that time from you. There’s nothing more important or more pressing in life than your growing closer to God because that is where all of the answers for everything else you face in life will be.

I personally have found that it is easiest for me if I set aside the same time every day to have my quiet time with God. Everyone in the house knows that is my time with Him and whatever they need will have to wait unless it is truly an emergency. I encourage you to protect your time with Him and to not allow other things to get in the way. You will find your days will go much better as you spend that valued time with Him!
